MIDDLE
SCHOOL PLAY
by H.C. and S.C.
The Woodstown Middle School Drama Club presented "Westward
Whoa!" this month. It was a western story about a villain named "Smiling
Slade" that robs a wagon train but frames Chuck Wagon. The play went well
and the Friday night show was a full house! The audience's reactions were great! They
were rolling with laughter and the cast got a standing ovation! The play
practices were every day after school from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting
in March. The stage crew did a great job of constructing and painting our
western sets. The cast and crew would like to give a big thanks to our
director, Ms. Gorman, for putting this show together!

GRANDPARENTS DAY
by H.C.
Grandparents Day was a big hit! The grandparents gathered in the
Auxiliary gym where they received carnations. The 5th and 6th grade
band played for them. The WMS Select Choir and Women's Choir also sang for
them .That
was followed by our Student Council President, C.C., who gave a nice speech.
After that, the students came to get their grandparents and do activities
with them. The grandparents got to see what type of work their grandchildren
are doing. Some grandparents got to see their grandchildren sing in the
choir or play in the band. It was a very fun and successful Grandparents'
Day.

BAND AND CHORUS CONCERT
by S.C.
On
Tuesday, May 6th, Mr. Ludlam and the Woodstown Band performed their Spring
Concert. Although the high school did wonderfully, the two middle school
bands (5th and 6th, and 7th and 8th) truly shined! The 5th and 6th
graders played two songs, the first one being "Dragon Slayer" and the second
one being the better known "Star Wars." Both sounded superb! Next up was the
7th and 8th graders. They performed "Grand Canyon Overture" and "The Best of
Queen." Before all of the bands played the combined piece "Pirates of the
Carribean," there were five middle school music merits given out. S.C., M.S.
and J.S. received an award for participating in the marching band a year
early. C.B. and A.R. received the same award for great skill and dedication.
Great Work!
On Wednesday, May 7th, Ms. Gorman and the Woodstown Middle School
choruses put on an outstanding show! The 7th and 8th Grade chorus performed
some beautiful pieces and the Select Choir sounded amazing during their
performance. The first Women's Choir also performed that evening, showing
that the early morning practices were worth the effort! The 5th and 6th
Grade chorus performed a beautiful Asian piece and sounded like little
angels! The audience totally enjoyed the entire evening!

TALENT SHOW
by E.G.
Lights! Camera! Action! The Talent Show was a hit! The Tri-M Music
Honor Society hosted the event to raise money for MIMA, an organization that
brings music to kids in schools where music programs are cut because of lack
of funds.
Acts were shown by students from grades 5 through 8. The performers
included C.C., W.S., N.W., B.M., K.A., C.B., A.D., A.L., G.W., W.H., M.C.,
H.C., A.S., M.M., A.W., S.M., D.B., C.T., B.E., S.R., J.F., and J.C. Most
performed in groups of two or three. There were guitar players, dancers,
comedians, piano players, jugglers, singers, and mixtures of all of them.
After everyone had performed, the judges picked the top three. From
there, Tri-M members passed around baskets to place their ticket into who
they wanted to win. Then the winner was announced. G.W. and W.H. won for
their rendition of "Let It Be" by the Beatles. This year's talent show was a
huge success!

PRE-ENGINEERING FAIR
by C.B.
Woodstown Middle School has started a new program
during cycle classes for their students. The 2007-2008 school year is the
first year engineering-related classes have been made available to grades
5-8. In 5th grade, they start off with "Zoom Into Engineering", and that is
just the basics of engineering. In 6th grade, the class they take is "Design
Squad", and in this class kids get to build things they design. In 7th
grade, the class available is called "Energy Detectives". This is where
students look for different ways to get energy. The 8th grade class is
"Building Big". In this class, the engineering concept is more specific.
They build a Westport Bridge Model.
The engineering fair was held to show parents the new
programs. The turnout wasn't as great as expected, but it was still good!
Kids showed examples of what they did, and it was a lot of fun! Mr. Burman,
the teacher of Building Big, was asked how he felt the fair turned out. His
response, "I think it turned out pretty well. There were some really nice
displays and the people there were pretty interesting. I'm very pleased with
what the kids have done and I'm really pleased with the curriculum." When he
was asked if he would do it again next year, he said "definitely!".
There is a possibility of these engineering classes
becoming optional electives that students can take all year long. They would
be set up to lead into some high school electives. When Mr. Burman was asked
about how he felt about this, his reply was, "It'd be great, but we'd need
different equipment so we can build to a higher level". All in all , the
fair was a lot of fun and a great success!
