          School Days - Healthy Ways

School Health Screenings

School health screenings will begin for students in grades K-4 on October 21, 22, & 23, 2008 and continue throughout the school year.  These screenings not only aid in the detection of abnormalities, but they are fun for our students!

According to New Jersey State guidelines, school health screenings will be conducted in the following grades:
                vision - grades K, 2, 4
                hearing - grades K, 1, 2, 3
                blood pressure - grades K-4
                height & weight - grades K-4
If an abnormality is noted, you will be informed so that you can discuss the results with your physician.

If you are ever concerned that your child may have a vision or hearing problem, please call me as screenings can be performed at any time throughout the school year.

Please Note - Very Important

Students are not permitted to carry and take their own medication in school.  A doctor's note is required for the school nurse to give any medicine,
even over-the-counter medicine.

Breakfast - The Fuel for Success

We all know the importance of a daily breakfast for school children.  What do you do, though, when a child does not have time or will not eat breakfast before school?  Here are some suggestions:
*Have a quiet, uninterrupted discussion with your child on the importance of breakfast.       Remember that the nutrients in breakfast provide the body with energy to think more clearly.
*Together, figure out how many hours your child goes without food if breakfast is not eaten.  You will be surprised how long!
*Let your child help you shop for breakfast food.
*Develop a morning routine that allows enough time for breakfast & stick to that routine.
*Be a role model for your child by eating a good breakfast.

How Much Sleep?

Did you know that older elementary school children need about 9-10 hours of sleep each night?
Kindergarten children need about 10-12 hours of sleep each night.  Since we start school so early in the morning, bedtimes need to be early.  Try to develop an evening routine, so that your child has some quiet time before bedtime in order to "wind down."

P. S.
Thank you for calling the school every morning that your child is absent!  You may call:
the main office - #769-0144, ext. 246 or 247, or
                the nurse's office - #769-0144, ext. 248.
If there is no answer, please leave a message.
