Here's what's happening in our classroom.

Our classroom is a very busy place!  Our school day always begins with Language Arts.  During this time we read together, in small groups or alone.  We spend time "working with words" and we practice our sight words. We also visit Literacy Centers. Each week we will introduce new words and new stories to read.  Next we dive into math.  This year we will be learning about numbers to 100, shapes, symmetry, addition and subtraction.  We'll find that there are many ways to solve our math problems. One day a week we have math centers. Writing is another thing we do each day.  We are drawing pictures that help us tell stories, then writing the stories to go along with the picture.  We always find time to share our stories with our classmates.  The rest of our day is filled with Science, Social Studies and Spanish, too.

HOMEWORK

Yes, there is homework in first grade!  It's a great time to begin the "homework habit".  Usually the children are very excited to have homework.  Please capitalize on this excitement and teach them from the very beginning the importance of being responsible, returning assignments on time and taking pride in their in work that is well done.  With the exception of Math, our homework will come home on Monday and will be due back on Friday.  Math workbook pages will come home as we get to them in the math workbook.  They should be completed and returned the following day.
