Welcome parents, students, and friends to Mrs. Mullison's homepage, and to Woodstown Middle School! I look forward to all of the learning experiences we will share this year.  Fifth grade will be a wonderful adventure for all of us!

This is my eighth year teaching fifth grade at Woodstown Middle School.  I teach Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  In each area, we will be completing many hands-on, interesting activities.

In Language Arts, we will be completing a variety of reading and writing activities.  We will be reading several novels throughout the course of the year, as well as working in Guided Reading groups.  During this time, we will focus on reading strategies that will help the children enhance their reading fluency, while developing an appreciation for reading and fostering habits of lifelong readers.  The first reading strategy we will focus on is making connections.  We will be reading the short story "Thank You, Mr. Falker" by Patricia Polacco.  We will then read the Newbery Honor Book Hoot by Carl Hiassen.  We will be working with this novel for several weeks.  We will also begin activities for Writer's Workshop by focusing on paragraph structure.

Another piece of Language Arts is our daily WRAP Session. This acronym stands for Writing, Reading, and Planning.  This is the time of day when students will be reading and/or writing independently.  Students will begin independent work in October after direct instruction on the strategies, expectations, and procedures for WRAP Session have been established by the classroom teacher.

Our final Language Arts components are Everyday Editing and Spelling.  We will work in each area weekly.   We will engage in a variety of spelling and writing/editing activities based on the Sitton, Cunningham, and Anderson programs.  Students will practice CORE words, which are high frequency words, as well as spelling patterns.  We will also complete a comprehensive unit on prefixes and suffixes.  Look for homework in these areas weekly!

This year in Math, we will continue to build on previously learned skills while exploring many new concepts.  We will be using the program Math Trailblazers.  This is a hands-on, inquiry based math program which provides extra support for those who need it, while challenging others at the same time. The first unit we will complete is Big Numbers.  We will focus on place value and multiplication and division strategies.  When possible, talk with your children about the importance of math to complete everyday tasks to help them recognize the importance of MATH in "real-world" situations!

In Social Studies, we will be studying American history from the earliest migratory groups to the Industrial Revolution.  We will also focus on map skills.  By the end of the year, your children will also have learned the location of each of the fifty states, as well as their two letter postal abbreviation and capital city!  Included below are links to some important Social Studies sites for practicing geography and reviewing text material.
