In Class Resource/Resource Room Teacher

2008-2009

Dear Families,

A new year brings the anticipation of seeing old friends again and of meeting many new ones!  I am quite happy to be found here at Mary Shoemaker School for so many reasons.  The teachers whom I  partner with are tops in their fields and look they forward to preparing a rich learning environment for your child.  It's a joy to be a part of that preparation.  I have met focused and supportive parents and caregivers who guide the children on the homefront, and work with an administration that is equally focused upon the children as individuals and encourages their full development as learners and as people in our community.  In the Mary Shoemaker School Community, my job is to serve the classified and non-classified students as the In Class Resource teacher and to serve the classified students in the Resource Room.  Being dually certified in Special Education and Elementary Education allows me the opportunity to co-teach with Mrs. Moore during math.  I am able, then, to work with all of the children within the context of the general education classes and work with small groups of children needing further practice or help in any way to ensure their success with the activity or task.  Another important part of my job is to facilitate the development of Language Arts skills for the classified students as determined by the IEPs designed by their parents, teachers, and Child Study Team members following the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.  This year I service a second grade Language Arts Resource Room with students from Mr. Morgan's and Mrs. Moore's classes.  I also service third graders from Mrs. Carpenter's class for Language Arts in the Resource Room .

HOMEWORK

The students will follow the math assignments from the general education teachers or the Resource Room Math teacher.  Language Arts assignments, including spelling, reading, and writing will come from me and will be listed in the agenda each day.  For the Baggy Book assignment, please allow your child to read to you from a book on his/her guided reading level, or read to your child from his/her leveled book or any other book that you choose.  Newspapers, books on tape, poems, and magazines are great sources of reading material. After reading, you and your child should talk about the story.  Reading, reading, and more reading will help to develop good comprehension strategies and word attack skills.  It's also a wonderful way to relax and chat about the day and days to come.
