Welcome to Mr. Fiolkowski's Home Page

2008 - 2009

Background

This is my seventh year at Woodstown Middle School. I transitioned to education beginning in 1997, after a successful career in the corporate community.  My prior teaching experience includes several years in the Philadelphia School District, followed most recently by a teaching position in the Gloucester Twp. School District.

Philosophy

As students enter middle school, they are empowered to begin to take control of their own learning.  Within clearly defined boundaries, students are encouraged to become successful learners within a safe, fun and stimulating environment.

Social Studies Curriculum

1.  Students will learn the fundamentals of geography, with an initial focus on its five core themes.  Map and chart reading skills will be addressed.  From there we will tour Canada, Central America, South America, and Western Europe.  Focal points will be the landscape, economic and social systems of the respective countries studied.  An emphasis on writing skills, connected with the Sitton Spelling program (see below) will be a focal point as well.

2.  The final marking period of the year will focus exclusively on Junior Achievement.  Within this unit, students will learn important life skills.  Personal finance skills, ethics, and small business management are some of the concepts that students will be taught.  The unit will culminate with a site visit to Junior Achievement in Wilmington on Thursday, June 4, 2009.  We will need the assistance of 20 parents on this day to help students manage their respective businesses.  Look for more information on this exciting event in the coming months.  Visit http://delaware.ja.org/ to take a virtual tour of the facility and obtain more information about the program.

Basic Skills

The Learning Support Program (LSP) works to bridge gaps in student learning by using a variety of techniques to supplement  classroom instruction as dictated by the Core Curriculum Content Standards.  Students in LSP will benefit from having a second teacher in the classroom and may receive additional help through small group or one-to-one instruction either during class or at targeted times.  The goal of LSP is to prevent knowledge gaps from widening and to help students ultimately become more independent learners.

My Schedule

The best time to reach me is between 10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., or after school.  I would be happy to correspond by e-mail if that is preferable.  An individual conference can be arranged at your convenience.

Grading for Social Studies

Grades will be calculated according to the following percentages.

Tests/Projects = 40%                 Quizzes = 30%

Homework = 15%                  Classwork = 15%

Homework must be turned in on the due date to receive credit.  Exceptions will be granted in the case of absence.  A one day absence causes a one day extension, a two day absence guarantees a two day extension, and so forth. Feel free to contact me on my cell phone at (856) 426 - 1129.
