Language Arts
The Woodstown-Pilesgrove vision for language arts literacy instruction indicates the expectation that students will receive a balanced literacy approach and will value their ability to use it in their everyday lives for pleasure, purpose, and enrichment.
Instruction includes a balance of the following four literacy components.
Word Study/Spelling – Rebecca Sitton spelling program based on most frequently used words in the written English language
Writer’s Notebook – Daily sustained student and teacher immersion in a variety of learning experiences for writing
Reader’s Workshop – Students engage in reading self-selected books.
Guided Reading – The teacher tailors instruction to meet the needs of the learner.
Literature Discussion Groups – Shared reading experiences with the whole class
Math
The third grade curriculum is designed to create an educational experience that results in children who are flexible mathematical thinkers, who see the connections between the mathematics they learn in school and the thinking they do in everyday life, and who enjoy mathematics. This curriculum incorporates the best of traditional mathematics, while widening the horizons of students’ mathematical thinking.
Science
The science curriculum for third grade is divided into four hands on, inquiry based units.
Kitchen Chemistry
The Scientific Process (preparing for KIC)
Alaskan Animals and the Iditarod
Moon and Stars
Social Studies
Third grade social studies will focus on civics, community service, patriotic symbols, mapping and geography.
