In
Miss. Brennan's English classes, students will focus on reading,
writing, and speaking and listening. Students will become independent
readers, gaining confidence and analytic skills while selecting reading
material that appeals to them.
When
analyzing and evaluating various forms of literature students will recognize
and explain how they relate to what they are reading. Drawing on prior
knowledge and learned concepts, students will evaluate the perceived
message, or theme, communicated by the author.
Students will recognize the challenges faced by fictitious and historical
characters and make inferences as to the root of the challenge. Further,
they will evaluate a character’s reaction and the subsequent consequences.
Students will analyze poetry for its perceived meaning while creating poetry
of their own.
Students will use various novels and dramatic works to evaluate the
structure of a tragedy. They will recognize how a flaw in the main
character, or how outside forces lead to a downfall for that character.
Students will be able to explain how the conflict in a piece of literature
escalates toward a climax, and will draw conclusions as to the resolution of
that conflict. Students will read short stories, novels, and plays written
by authors such as Hemingway, Poe, Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and more!
